Ever seen someone's Instagram bio in an elegant script or a bold, spaced-out style and wondered how they did it? Those aren't special images — they're real characters you can type from your iPhone once you add a custom font keyboard. Here's how it works and how to set one up.
How "custom fonts" actually work on iOS
iOS doesn't let apps change the system font inside Messages or Instagram. So font keyboards use a clever workaround: they map your normal letters to Unicode look-alike characters — special symbols that resemble stylized letters. Because these are standard Unicode, they travel anywhere text goes: bios, captions, comments, chats, even names. That's why the "font" survives when you paste it into another app.
The practical upshot: you're not installing a typeface, you're typing different characters that look like a fancy font. It's the right tool for short, expressive text — a bio, a caption, a shout-out — rather than long paragraphs.
Step 1: Install a font keyboard app
Download a keyboard app from the App Store — for example, Keyboard Fonts, which adds a wide selection of styles to your iOS keyboard without ads getting in the way. Open it once after installing so it can finish setup.
Step 2: Enable the keyboard in Settings
This is the step people miss. Go to:
- Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards
- Tap Add New Keyboard… and choose the font keyboard from the list.
- Tap the keyboard's name again and toggle on Allow Full Access if the app needs it to work across other apps.
A quick note on that "Full Access" prompt: it's a standard iOS permission that lets a third-party keyboard function everywhere. Only enable it for a keyboard you trust, and check the app's privacy policy — a good font keyboard has no reason to send your keystrokes anywhere.
Step 3: Switch to it and start typing
In any app with a text field, tap to bring up the keyboard, then tap and hold the globe icon (🌐) in the bottom-left and pick your font keyboard. Type your text, choose a style, and it's inserted in that look. In some apps you'll type in the keyboard's own field and tap to copy, then paste where you want it.
Where custom fonts shine
- Social bios — Instagram, TikTok, and X bios stand out with a distinctive style.
- Captions and comments — a styled word or two draws the eye.
- Group chats — a playful font makes a message pop.
A couple of things to keep in mind: because these are special characters, screen readers may read them awkwardly, so use them for flourish rather than essential information — and stick to short bursts of text for the best effect.
That's the whole process: install a keyboard, enable it in Settings, switch with the globe key, and pick a style. Once it's set up, giving any post or bio a bit of personality takes just a couple of taps.
